With its brilliant high street, strong community spirit and easy access to the spectacular Surrey Hills, Banstead can often feel like a real, rural village. However, owning a property in Banstead means that you get to enjoy all the benefits of living close to London, too. It’s the perfect choice for anyone who wants to make the most of both green open spaces and the capital’s world-famous cultural and culinary scenes.
At the heart of the town is Banstead's vibrant high street, which is packed full of independent boutiques, shops, pubs and restaurants. Nestled in the South Downs, there's excellent walking in all directions, and the Surrey Hills are just a short drive away.
Banstead's impressive range of local primary and junior schools makes it an attractive home for families. However, it's also an excellent spot for anyone who desires a slower pace of life but still needs to stay close to London.
The A217 bypasses Banstead, reducing traffic in the village centre and providing direct access to Sutton, Reigate and the M25. The extensive bus network makes it relatively easy to reach Epsom, Sutton and Croydon, too. The village train station runs two services every hour to London Victoria.
Originally a farming area well-known for producing high-quality wool, the manor that owned and occupied much of Banstead was regularly visited by English royalty. In the 17th century, it became an area famed for horse racing, until late 19th-century development saw the population increase dramatically.
Epsom Racecourse, home of the world-famous Epsom Derby, is just five minutes from the village, and there's fantastic walking to be done in the area. The Banstead May Fayre is also a popular event with residents and visitors, while the millionaire mansions in neighbouring Kingswood boast some famous residents, including Shane Ritchie.
