Havant can trace its history back to before the Romans when a Celtic settlement stood at the site of the town. In 1760, much of the town was destroyed by fire. However, this allowed the town to widen its streets, making them more suitable for stagecoaches and ensured Havant became an essential stop on well-trodden travel routes. The arrival of the railway also spurred considerable growth.
