Whereas the town had a population of just 200 at the start of the 1850s, it’s now home to 22,800 residents.

HOW HAYWARDS GOT ITS NAME

A local legend suggests that the town's name came from a notorious local highwayman, Jack Hayward. However, there is little evidence to back this up. Haywards Heath celebrates Town Day every September, which attracts considerable crowds.
