A SHORT HISTORY OF LEWES

Lewes was most likely founded by the Saxons, though there are suggestions that a Roman settlement existed before this. In 1264, King Henry III was defeated by Simon de Montfort in the Battle of Lewes, which took place on the hills above the town. Residents of the town also suffered under the Marian Persecutions of 1555, and several protestants were burned at the stake during this time.

The iconic Lewes bonfire celebrations have put the town on the map and attract more than 60,000 people every year. The Glyndebourne Festival Opera is held at the Glyndebourne Country House and has become one of the most famous opera events in the world. Nearby Pells Pool is the oldest freshwater swimming pool in the country.
