For indoor activities, there is Dinosaur Isle (Britain's first purpose-built dinosaur museum), the Wight Link Raiders ice hockey games, and the world class Heights Leisure Centre. An eclectic range of high street shops and a wide variety of pubs, restaurants, ice cream parlours and traditional cafes complete the mix. Some standout venues include the Scruffy Jacks sports bar on the pier, The Bank diner, Royal China restaurant, and the Kings Head pub overlooking Sandown Bay. Many hotels are open to the public for food and drink through the summer season as well.
Sandown is well situated between its sister seaside town of Shanklin and the historic town of Brading. A railway station runs to Shanklin one way through to Ryde Pier Head rail station, where the choice of transport links to the mainland include a catamaran or hover craft. There is also a good regular bus service running from Sandown to all corners of the island.
