What Is Life Like In Goring-by-Sea?

Goring-by-Sea is an idyllic neighbourhood in the West Sussex Borough of Worthing. Located on the sunny Sussex coast between the South Downs chalk hills and the English Channel, Goring-by-Sea has a winning combination of blue sea and green countryside.

Goring-by-Sea has just over 7,500 residents, dwarfed by the neighbouring town of Worthing with its population of over 100,000. This combination gives Goring-by-Sea residents the best of both worlds: a quiet seaside resort with easy access to a bustling town. Its excellent schools and strong transport links make it popular with families, while its coastal location and many available bungalow properties attract retirees as well.

Property demand is highest for George V Avenue, Wallace Avenue and Goring-by-Sea Road. Houses on South Ferring, Goring-by-Sea Hall and Gerald Road are also sought after and sell quickly.

History Of Goring-by-Sea

Before becoming one of Worthing’s main suburbs, Goring-by-Sea was its own parish, simply called Goring. Recorded in the Domesday survey of 1085 as ‘Garinges’, it’s thought that its name may mean either 'Gāra's people', or 'people of the wedge-shaped strip of land'.

Residential development began in the 19th Century and continued into the 20th Century, when Goring-by-Sea became part of the Borough of Worthing in 1929. The name ‘Goring-by-Sea’ was then created to differentiate it from the village of Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire.
